You can reduce file sizes by 20-90%, even for images with transparency and animated frames. Currently supported by Chrome, Opera and Firefox, you can expect it to get more support soon.

Note: The app uses data from Pirate Weather – ‘A weather forecast API, built as a compatible alternative to the Dark Sky API.’ Unfortunately, Pirate Weather’s sign-up functionality as well as its section of API-related information appeared to be broken when I visited (hoping to use its API for one of my projects).

But I do think Merry Sky works well and feels much like Dark Sky visually.
